The Legend of Inikpi
1. The costume is probably the one category that scores the highest in this movie.
2. It tells an African story of sacrifice, conflict, preservation and love. It’s good marketing for African heritage.
1. A common story told in an unimpressive way.
2. The story lacked a much needed depth. Some scenes were too long. The point is made, get on with the show.
It was much ado about not so much.
This movie attempts to tell an African story, something Africans should do more of.
They could’ve however done more with the story than they did. They could’ve done better.
If you’re going to tell a story that is so similar to one of the most popular stories in the world then you really have to have something special and something different with which you can at least make a killing.
The legend of Inikpi fails to tell a common story in an uncommon way.
The scenes were very basic, the plot was very basic there was no amazing acting, there were no shockers, there really was nothing that was captivating about this movie. If it will score at all it will be for the costume. This is in no way a blockbuster kind of movie and it was very evident because it was one of the least attended movies that I’ve been to in a really long time.
The producers of the movie basically wanted to talk about something they felt was a truly African story- an African story of sacrifice to save your own people, a much-needed story in present-day Africa you may say but they didn’t do the story enough justice. This movie will hardly inspire, let alone spark a revolution anywhere.
In addition, many scenes were too long and became an overkill for what should’ve been a basic rush-through scene.
It seemed more like a story meant to teach kids a lesson on sacrifice, heck! even kids would get bored before the movie gets mid way quite honestly. I’m sure the producers know they could’ve done way better or not gone with the idea at all.
Star Performer- Saheed Balogun
Even though most of the acting was just so basic, we’ll give this one to Saheed ( and not Sam Dede 😞). He’s been a bit behind the scene in recent years and plays an unfamiliar role of the town priest. He also played a role as his own father. Fair enough for a comeback I guess.
Can-do-better Performer- Odunlade Adekola
Odunlade is renowned across Nollywood as a comic actor. When the artwork of the movie was released, most people thought he’d bring the comic relief into what seemed like a serious story. Well, that didn’t happen. He played one scene that felt quite unnecessary and to be fair to him, there was very little to laugh about throughout the entirely movie quite honestly.
