WHY MERCY AIGBE’S ‘THIN LINE’ FALLS SHORT OF  CINEMA STANDARD

Thin Line, a movie produced by Nollywood star, Mercy Aigbe is out in cinemas and has been viewed by many people. The movie which was released on December 13, 2024 was said to be inspired by true events according to Mercy Aigbe.

The movie tells the story of Pastor Raymond( Uzor Arukwe) who has a thriving ministry, and a happy family. He is happily married to his wife, Pastor Dammy(Mercy Aigbe), things however go south for him when during one of his travels, he crosses paths with a kleptomaniac sex worker in a most unplanned fashion, she drugs him and then creates a video with him in bed, which she later uses to blackmail him overtime. The drama heightens when this sex worker is murdered, all evidence at the crime scene points towards Pastor Raymond, however, Pastor Raymond is totally ignorant of circumstances surrounding her death. There is a thin line, and her death must be investigated.

First, while watching, it was very clear there was a story, but mid-way into the movie, it seemed there were challenges on how to put the piece together, I was initially entertained with the comic scenes from cute Abiola, Ebun Oloyede and Yvonne Jegede. Not to give spoilers, but I think the part where Pastor Raymond was drunk wasn’t properly thought of, how does a Pastor of his calibre not have a P.A when travelling for a programme? He wasn’t even drugged in an hotel room , he was drugged at an open place, I thought Pastors of his calibre as portrayed in the movie have high security details around them. Well, perhaps I am trying to be too realistic, it’s just a movie.

Also, Mercy Aigbe might probably have sat out of this lead role as the Pastor’s wife, she really struggled to fit in. The scene where she was singing praise songs seemed like she struggled with the lyrics of the song. Also, who wears heels while serving her husband at home without any indication in the scene she was going out shortly. Again, let’s ignore these obvious gaping holes in the filming.

Then, please what was with the very fake and boring accent from Ibrahim Yekini, it sounded too unpleasant to the ear drums as every word in that accent made almost everywone in the cinema cringe, there mild hisses and murmuring as Ibrahim Yekini spoke with the ‘American accent’, Ibrahim Yekini is a fantastic actor, I think he should have just channeled that energy in the role to a Yoruba gangster that would have been more fun to watch.

Well, as a Mercy Aigbe fan, I really was expecting to see something as entertaining as 77 Bullets or even The Ghost and the tout.

The movie stars  Uzor Arukwe, Mercy Aigbe, Iyabo Ojo, Olaiya Igwe, The Cute Abiola, Jaiye Kuti, Adeniyi Johnson, Olu ‘Deno Adebamowo, Yvonne Jegede, Uche Montana, Prisma James, Ibrahim Yekini, Akintunde Yusuf, Martins Ogbebor, Uzor Arukwe, Nkechi Blessing Sunday, Daniella Peters, and Motilola Akinlami
