OWAMBE THIEVES

A POOR SEQUENCE ECLIPSES A WELL THOUGHT PLOT.

I must commend the PR for Owambe Thieves. The PR gave an appetite for the movie such that I literally set my calendar for the movie premiere and I just couldn’t wait to get to the cinemas and book my ticket to watch. Well, ‘we have seen it and we are back’ and the title of this review encapsulates my thoughts.

Owambe Thieves is a new movie produced by Eniola Ajao.

The movie tells the story of  Lola and Cheta, an inter-ethnic couple who have their fair share of poverty and the whips of it. They toil tirelessly to make ends meet but poverty seems to be their alibi, faced with unending embarrassment and disgrace from family and friends, they conceive a ‘clever’ idea to steal the money sprayed at Lola’s sister’s wedding, their plan goes through perfectly and they become millionaires overnight,  seeing this as lucrative business, they major on it and make a profession out of it as they attend and steal from many other wedding parties, they steal from a particular wedding party and a secret between one of them causes a division which sets up the movie for a suspensful twist.

One notable thing about Owambe Thieves is that there was a story to tell, and the writer did their best to tell this, however, a poor sequence does make the story foggy at some point. The movie does well in costuming as we are left with that rich Owambe wear vibes, but for the storyline, it just wasn’t it even if it was obvious there was a story.

First, we are not even introduced properly to why Lola’s mother didn’t want her to marry Cheta, a subtle flashback for Lola at the beginning when Lola and Cheta were experiencing hardship would have properly introduced us to the reasons.

Also, there was a very clear and obvious error which appears to be a huge gaping hole in the movie, everybody in the cinema just had to exclaim Ah!, and what was that? Well, the scene Lola points a gun to her husband was during daylight, she however has a flashback and by the time she comes back to the present still holding the gun with the same environmental happenings, it was already night, how now? Such mistakes are not cinema worthy, that was just to obvious

Well, the movie does well in the usual interesting dialogues, and may I say that Zubby Michael did pull out his role perfectly, his dialogue and communication really brought so much entertaining act to the movie.

The movie was Directed by Adeoluwa Owu and was premiered on April 18

The cast in this are: Zubby Michael, Eniola Ajao, Femi Branch, Sola Sobowale, Wumi Toriola, Akin Lewis, Odunlade Adekola, Faithia Balogun, Denrele Edun, Seliat Adebowale, Ronke Oshodi Oke, Halima Raheem and a few others.

From All of Us at RealNollywood, we rate the movie a 37%
