BIG LOVE: Biodun Stephen’s Shutterspeed And Inkblot Productions’ First Collaboration Makes Box Office Record
Biodun Stephen seems to be on a streak, she hits the Industry with another good one titled ‘Big Love’, well, the movie is off to a good start as it debuted as last week’s most popular movie in Nigerian cinemas. This is according to The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) data. It is the only Nollywood film in the top five spots. The film is a collaboration between Inkblot Productions, award-winning filmmaker Biodun Stephen, and FilmOne Entertainment.
The movie was written and directed by Biodun Stephen, it takes audiences on a captivating journey of laughter, tears, and renewed love.
The Plot revolves around rich kid Adil who runs into Adina an old classmate and longtime crush at a graduate training camp. Reacquainting himself with her, Adil falls for her again. They begin with sexcapades, even though Adil seems to be the only one invested in the relationship. Adina repeatedly tells him their escapades are temporary and merely an escape from her reality. Unknown to Adil, she has a three-year-old kid. She also does not see a future with Adil, especially after learning of his mother’s disposition towards illegitimate kids. But Adil is persistent; he forces a transfer from Abuja to Ibadan, where she has been posted, and there he discovers Adina’s big secret. Although he comes to terms with it without missing a beat, Adina is not convinced, so Adil comes up with a plan. He tells a big lie—he tells his family that Adina’s son is his long-lost son and convinces her to play along, but there is a much bigger secret lurking, and it makes an already uncomfortable story more cringe. The story takes on an unexpected dimension when the identity of Adina’s father is revealed, which creates a complication that changes the nature of the plot to a family drama. But this complication that turns the plot on its head is glossed over like an inconsequential detail to force the romantic narrative.
Well, Biodun Stephen seems to be continually improving in her craft. One thing I could say while seeing the movie was the careful effort put in the plot. There were precise details in the flow and continuity in the plot. It was a story of romance and yes, it was well told.
Although the film needs little exposition, the way it is presented is weak and creates holes in the plot. We do not know how Adina and the alleged father encountered each other considering that both characters seem to stay miles apart and the consistent repetition of “it was just a drunken night” just ends up befuddling. We however ignore this slip up because the movie gives us that romantic energy.
Timini Egbuson, Bimbo Ademoye, Shafy Bello, Jaiye Kuti, Seyi Awolowo Kalu Ikeagwu.Teniola Aladese, Deza The Great are among the notable cast in this.
Star Performer(s)- Nil
It’s becoming difficult picking a star performer these days. Most Nollywood movies now have actors delivering their usual acting;nothing extraordinary.
