CORDELIA

FILM AUTEUR, TUNDE KELANI RETURNS WITH “CORDELIA”

Cordelia opened in Nigerian cinemas on July 18, 2025, after three years in the making. Adapted from Femi Osofisan’s eponymous novella and scripted by Bunmi Ajiboye, it marks Kelani’s return to filmmaking with his signature blend of cultural resonance and moral inquiry
Set in early‑1990s Nigeria during a period of military rule, the film follows Professor Adekunle Benson, who shelters a wounded student—later revealed to be Cordelia, daughter of a wrongfully accused coup figure. When national conspiracies collide with personal loyalties, the professor must grapple with safety, justice, and conscience. Thematically, the film explores silence as a tool of power, the quiet suffering of the marginalized, and the moral costs of complicity. Cordelia shows at cinemas.
Tunde Kelani both Producer and Director, crafts the film with subtle restraint—focusing on shadowed university halls, subdued domestic spaces, and slow reveals instead of spectacle. The film’s power lies in what’s left unsaid. Some Critics highlight that the film “whispers where others shout,” and forces viewers to reflect on their own silence.

He(Tunde Kelani) also weaves African motifs with Western orchestration, amplifying emotional depth and echoing the film’s cultural layering with the music.
Omowunmi Dada does deliver a compelling and emotionally layered portrayal of Cordelia, and William Benson appears to be making fast headwaves in the industry, he embodies a professor torn between acquiescence and resistance. Supporting performances by Yvonne Jegede, Kelechi Udegbe, and Keppy Ekpeyong enhance the film’s emotional landscape. Kelani’s attention to detail shines in settings that evoke the tension and austerity of the era—campus protests, quiet dormies, and tense domestic spaces build a slow-burning atmosphere throughout.

While we praise a well-done epic, there are unresolved questions and ambiguities linger by design—this intentional tension may frustrate those who prefer narrative closure.
