CITATION
1.The first positive would have to be content. This movie comes at just the right time, considering the numerous sexual scandals ravaging our university system, and also the incessant rape cases we hear almost every day. It does well to create some awareness. So "content" is a first positive
2. I would give credit to the directing, personally Kunle Afolayan has a particular trademark on his movies. You can almost tell a Kunle Afolayan movie by various scenes. He has a trademark on his movies. Good directing
3. I think the cinematography and screenplay were decent.
4.I think the costume team did a good job here. The choice of wear for the casts especially the students could be relatable.
1.My first negative will have to be the time. The movie was too long. I feel they were some redundant scenes. Everything could have been fused into at most 1h 45mins. Though interesting, but I couldn't help looking at the duration bar from time to time in anticipation for the end.
2. Temi Otedola struggled to speak Yoruba. Her French was top notch. But as a viewer who desired so much realness, I couldn't wrap my head around that accent she spoke Yoruba with. We can do better with indigenous language delivery. I once heard Yoruba actor Lateef Oladimeji speak the Igbo language/pidgin so well that he sounded like a native Igbo man. I believe this is acting, so it should be done to the best.
3. As a graduate of OAU who has been in that environment, I couldn't help but notice that some of the common students' 'lingua franca' weren't really used. At some point, it felt I was watching a movie shot in another university outside Nigeria, could it be the Writer/Director didn't want us to focus on that aspect? anyways it could be noticed though. "Bloody Fresher" was the only language I heard common amongst students in that environment, perhaps more in-depth study of the environment should have been done.
A timely piece. A movie you definitely should see if you haven't seen it.
Citation is a 2020 Nigerian film that portrays a student who speaks out after a university professor attempts to rape her, and the reaction of the university to her claims. Inspired by true events, a movie which chronicles the ordeals almost every young girl caught in the web of sexual predators in guise of Lecturers face. It starts with an intelligent young post graduate student who on her journey of academic preeminence is lured in the web of a randy professor who came in guise of a caring lecturer. This student would later be a voice for the numerous girls who are scared to speak against sexual abuse they face with these lecturers, hence becoming the face of a voice against sexual abuse. You should see this movie, it contains the details of the ordeals young girls face in the hands of randy lecturers and most often times the modus operandi of these sexual predators.
A movie of this calibre already scores high on the content. In a time where many sexual scandals have ravaged our universities, this couldn’t have come less timely. I believe with this, many young girls who have been victims of sexual abuse or attempted rape can be bold to come out and speak out against these randy lecturers.
The acting was decent. Ohh!, 😎 was that a debut role for Temi Otedola. In my opinion, she did incredibly well, honestly far more than I expected. She should consider a career in acting. The acting from the cast was decent. They all did well. Good stuff!
A Kunle Afolayan movie already has a standard it sets for itself even before being viewed. Personally, I think Kunle Afolayan has constantly lived up to his benchmark of constant delivery of content. I would say this is a movie with content and relevance. It comes at just the right time. Should have come sooner.
A movie with major scenes shot in OAU(Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
