PROPHETESS
1. The first positive would have to be the storyline, it was authentic, relatable. Betting has overtime become a big industry, and many people venture into it with the aim of getting rich quick. Also, quite a number of people still believe in Prophets/Prophetesses, so a fusion of these two for a course creates something tasty.
2. The movie one way or the other tends to re-project Nigerian Football, it's a good way to stir up the Sports industry to revive Nigerian Football.
3. Good acting from beginning till the end. There is no doubt Niyi Akinmolayan strives for excellence.
4. The scene of the football match and fans was well delivered.
1. The prediction of the match by the Prophetess was somewhat vague, it should have been clearer. The prediction was only known when people had started placing their bets.
2. The end seemed too theatrical, only few Goalkeepers will save a penalty and not remember to catch the ball back, some other way to project the 'miraculous' might have been used.
Great comedy and drama. A good see, if you haven't seen it.
PLOT
Ajoke, a local Prophetess is caught in a frenzy when she makes a bogus prediction about a football match. With many people placing bets on her prediction, a chain of events unfold beyond her control.
Well, even from the trailer, it’s quite visible, “Prophetess” is a comic package, a fusion of comedy and drama. Though the storyline hinges on a fake prediction or prophecy made, it however actually is a prediction against logical reasoning, made by an ignorant impostor.
There really is no doubt Niyi Akinmolayan is doing a great job in the movie industry, “Chief Daddy” and “Wedding Party” aren’t to be forgotten in a hurry. He directs this movie as well, as Victoria Teimere Akujobi, Mimido Bartels and Sola Matilda produce it.
Premiered in Cinemas on March 26, 2021, the movie boasts of some top guns in the movie industry, Toyin Abraham, Kehinde Bankole, Lateef Adedimeji,Tina Mba, Muyiwa Ademola, Uzor Arukwe, to mention a few.
The location the movie was shot was quite good for the setting and storyline, that was Ibadan I believe. It was also great to see some old-time faces in the industry. Seeing Muyiwa Ademola and Ronke Oshodi-Oke in a contemporary Nollywood movie was nice .
Star Act: Lateef Adedimeji and Kehinde Bankole
Lateef Adedimeji who starred as Ezekiel and Kehinde Bankole who starred as Labake are no doubt the top acts here. Lateef Adedimeji expressed his character so well and refined, not many yoruba actors can produce that ‘igbotic’ accent he has. Kehinde Bankole also put a chunk of her emotion into her role, if you weren’t sitting before a screen, you almost could launch out to give her a hug promising her everything would be alright. Great cast though
Can-do-better performer- Nil.
Contemporary Nollywood keeps dishing out great stuff!
