COLLISION COURSE

by

Nollywood has mirrored echoes of the 2020 EndSARS movement in every way possible. The message cannot be overemphasized. Police brutality has no place in Nigeria!

Just like Oraka Nvy Nnanyelu’s Symphony, Bolanle Austeen Peters’ Collision Course gives a nostalgia of the 2020 EndSARS movement which engulfed Nigeria as a whole, with youths protesting against the oppression and brutality meted out by Police officers on innocent citizens.

The movie tells the plight of  Mide Johnson(Daniel Etim Effiong) an upcoming artiste who has an unsavory encounter with the Police, he is assaulted and extorted, this experience leaves a scar he doesn’t recover from easily.

With increasing apprehension, he finds himself with a strong detest for anyone on uniform.

Things further take a worse turn when he encounters Corporal Magnus(Kelechi Udegbe), an unhappy and discontented police officer who tries to keep a nagging wife from leaving him due to economic hardship, with the Police not paying well enough, he seeks to find extortion from motorists an easy way to make money to keep his family together.

A collision of these two takes this bittersweet story on a tragic journey.

One beautiful thing we are beginning to learn about Bolanle Austeen Peters is she really does love telling stories of societal relevance, this she also showed with her 2022 release Man of God which addressed some religious irregularities in the society. Just like Man of God, she does direct this well also.

We don’t really get to see many movies going straight to the point. I really must give kudos to  Austeen Peters’,  Collision Course really does go straight to the point, the storyline was so straightforward, not bland either. From the first scene, it was very clear what the story was all about. Well, sometimes simple is more.

With just a few cast, the director was able to do quite a good job with a dynamic storyline as this. Some of the cast in this are Daniel Ettim Effiong, Kelechi Udegbe, Chioma Akpotha, Bamike Olawunmi, Ade Laoye, Kenneth Okolie, Gregory Ojefua and a few others.

The movie is a Bolanle Austeen Peters(BAP) production, and initially released November 4, 2021, it was later released on Netflix on September 2, 2022.

The film was the winner of Best Movie West Africa in Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2022.

Star Performer-  Kelechi Udegbe

Playing Corporal Magnus, Kelechi Udegbe really did make a case for police officers who are victim of a system without good remuneration with some very great acting. His acting was prolific, real, and very relatable.
