Keep Your Tissue Close For This One

Emotional, tear-jerking, moving, stirring, heart-rending, these are few words that encapsulate how the movie “Sista” could leave every attentive viewer while watching it.

No matter how hard-hearted you are, this movie tugs at your heartstrings, I certainly had my share of tears while watching. The subject matter is one that everyone, single parent or not, can relate to. The story is told in a gentle manner that is neither overly dramatic nor subpar, employing flashbacks, which ensures viewers are kept up to date all through. It uses a small cast, and each one of the actors gives a good report of themselves.

Sista revolves around a woman whose partner abandons her with an 8-months pregnancy and a 2-year-old son. Years after, the struggling single mother faces her worst nightmare when the father of her children comes into their lives and completely steals their attention all to himself.

Sista creates an impactful storyline with a very small cast, the movie is a drama, and it has comedy embedded in it. The comedy is gentle and not over the top, and it makes you smile even as you deeply feel the emotions of the characters.

Kehinde Bankole shows so much range in this movie that she deserves every flower coming her way. She has been acting for a while. She started with Wale Adenuga Productions on the small screen, but she has proven herself repeatedly. She has portrayed a spectrum of characters and aced each one. In this role, you will believe she is semi-educated. The emotions she displays – you find yourself rooting for her and reacting along with her. You are ready to go to war alongside her.

According to the director and writer, Biodun Stephen,  “The story of Sista is important to me because first, it celebrates my mother who is not Sista actually, but I was raised by a single mum, and I saw her struggle, and I saw how difficult it was for her”. “Being a mother now, I appreciate those times when she had a meltdown”.

The storyline was simple, straightforward forward, and easy to follow with no unnecessary twists or complications, and will have you seated through to the end without getting bored.

The production, lighting, costuming, makeup, background music, soundtrack, and setting were all well done!

The movie was Produced and Directed by Biodun Stephen.

The movie stars Kehinde Bankole, Deyemi Okanlawon, Bisola Aiyeola, Akintola Adeoluwa, Adediwura Adesegha, and Adedamola Adewale.

One beautiful thing we cannot take away from the movie is the careful attention to details by the Director, we are taken on a journey where we were and then, we enjoyed how perfect the past was concurrently bought into the present. The way the past and present events were synchronized was perfect. The acting was topnotch. Sista does not boast of great technicality or dramatic cinematic angles, but the simplicity of the story does not require those. Kudos to the director for giving us a movie that you want to watch again and relive some of the moments. Keep your tissue close by for this one.notch.

It also has a major moral lesson, especially for teenage girls, and how teenage pregnancy can ruin their life and future plans.

We however noticed an unavoidable mistake which had to do with Grammar, Anu and her brother in their usual habit of correcting their Mother(Sista), made a wrong correction on the pronunciation of “debt”, Sista had gotten the right pronunciation, cut, retake(laughs).

Take nothing from a movie which didn’t need some sophisticated cinematography or technicality to show a storyline we can all relate to, Sista really is a must watch movie!
