THE SET UP
1.Firstly, I'd love to give the cinematography a thumbs up. Nollywood has really improved tremendously. The Nigerian movie industry definitely has raised the dyke and set a new benchmark for the new accepted standard. Cinematography was great.
2.Personally, I feel the actors were so professional, a movie which stars A-list actors as Adesua Etomi, Jim Iyke, Kehinde Bankole, Dakore Egbuson, with veterans like Joke Silva and Tina Mba just already leaves you drooling in anticipation for the best entertainment. I must commend the Director, Niyi Akinmolayan for working well with them in delivering a Nollywood classic.
3.An aspect of movies that's so pivotal is the continuity. I couldn't help but notice even with the flashbacks, the continuity was top notch and on point. Various flashbacks had a connection with present scenes. I loved such realness, felt like I was witnessing a live event.
1.My first negative would have to be the numerous plot twist in the movie. At some point, I wasn't really understanding the story anymore, I'd have to pause, think about what exactly had been happening, then play. I feel the movie was unnecessarily sophisticated. The numerous plot twist were superfluous to me.
2.I feel the soundtrack could have been better. Just a particular opinion though. The music was good, I just feel there could have been some more 'Nigerianess' in the soundtrack.
3.Personally, as a person of faith, asides the fact that 'Pastor' Dimeji(Uzor Arukwe) was a corrupt Pastor as the movie portrayed, I didnt like the fact he was still referred to as Pastor towards the end and even kissed a woman not his wife again in the name of 'proposing'. Kind of disrespects the title "Pastor" to me though. I'm sorry, couldn't help but notice that.
The Set Up is a Nigerian crime drama suspense thriller film which portrays two friends turned sisters who overtime had always sacrificed for each other from childhood. However, growing up they would later turn drug dealers in a bid to survive, in the drug dealing ‘business’, they are later drawn into a web of opportunists and con artists who take advantage of them by using them to swindle a wealthy family amidst many other criminal acts.
A movie which exposes the secret and underground dealings of some people who deal in drugs is a laudable one. As an aside, I love the image this movie gives the NDLEA (National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency) in efforts to combat drug trafficking.
The acting in this movie was very professional. A movie with such an array of A-list actors as Adesua Etomi, Joke Silva, Jim Iyke, Dakore Egbuson, Tina Mba, Kehinde Bankole can only set your anticipation as high as ever. The movie didn’t disappoint on delivering content from the calibre of actors.
The continuity and cinematography for me was great. Asides the numerous and excess plot twist which was more of a “no-no” for me. I think the movie is just a little short of perfect. I enjoyed what I saw.
Star Performer- The A-list actors
If I chose one, I’d have to choose all. The major cast in this movie were professional as they are. Great to see Jim Iyke and Dakore Egbuon once more. Joke Silva would always dazzle with her excellent vocabulary skills. They all did amazing!
Can do better performer- Ayoola Ayolola
Ayoola Ayolola who stars as Bamidele Esho for me would have to fall short of the standard of acting seen in the movie. There’s always room for improvement. He did try but I feel he could have delivered his role better with more realness.
