“THE WEEKEND” REVEALS POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF MEETING A FAMILY-TO-BE

Have you seen a Nigeria horror film in a while? Well, if you haven’t you might want to see ‘The weekend’!

The story follows Nikiya  and Luc, who recently engaged and are happy. Nikiya is desperate for a family after her mother’s death left her orphaned at a young age. She then turns to her fiancé’s family and finds their engagement to be the perfect opportunity to connect. Unfortunately, Luc is estranged from his family, though they mostly keep in contact by phone. His reluctance towards seeing them is built on a family grudge he can’t seem to release. On the other hand, Nikiya is convincing, however, he finally agrees to take her to his parents’ house for their anniversary  where we are plunged into series of horrifying secrets about her soon to be in-laws.

Well, The Weekend’s suspense builds up from the moment the couple decide to visit Luc’s hometown village. There, his parents, Meki  and Omicha, await their arrival. The discomfort built in from Luc’s dismay about his childhood memories offers a suspenseful environment that will have you questioning the source of his grudge. We eventually find out, but the lead-up to the finale is what provides the entertainment. The mere fact that the truth comes later is what keeps us glued to the screen in wonder.

The movie does have an engaging plot from beginning to the end, we are taken by sequence through the life and upbringing of Nikiya and we are able to relate to her quest for a family environment. Then, the SFX effects gave the movie that needed anxiety that comes with horror movies, the movie brought that horror movie feeling, you most likely might not want to see the Weekend late at night if you are nyctophobic.

With little notable cast, the Director(Daniel Oriahi) does a great job to bring out top notch acting, some of the actors in this are Uzoamaka Aniunoh , Bucci Franklin , Meg Otanwa , Damilola Ogunsi , Keppy Ekpenyong-Bassey , Gloria Anozie. and the writing was done by Freddie O. Anyaegbunam Jr. , Vanessa Kanu,  and Egbemawei Dimiyei Sammy.
