HIJACK 93: A LOW BUDGET PRODUCTION OF A TRUE LIFE EVENT
Monday, October 25 1993 witnessed one of the most horrific for flight passengers in Nigeria as a plane belonging to the Nigeria Airways was hijacked , the plane which was enroute Abuja from Lagos was hijacked by four teenagers who were in a protest for a Democratic government as opposing the then oppresive military regime of the day. The movie Hijack 93′ depicts the occurences surrounding this event.
Written by Musa Jeffery David and Directed by Robert O. Peters, the film begins with a group of four teenagers, Skipper (Nnamdi Agbo), Eruku (Adam Garba), Owiwi (Allison Emmanuel), and Iku (Oluwaseyi Akinsola) all in a plan with Mallam Jerry(Sam Dede) to hijack an inter-state plane. As the plane takes off, the drama begins with the four hijackers calming the passengers, telling them they were no terrorists but advocates for Democracy, but being held against their will, panic and anxiety becomes the order of the day for the passengers.
With the aim to divert the plane to Germany by the hijackers, there is the need to refuel, hence the Pilots land in Niger Republic where the Army holds them hostage and the plot further unravels in the midst of many drama.
One notable thing is the fact that the lead cast in this movie are not A-list actors, and they managed to pull through. The movie also seemed a little subpar as we are left with bland conversations and disjointed storyline. It seemed the writer was torn between fictionary and non-fictionary, and this indecision was displayed in the story development.
The movie did ride on some veterans, as Bob Manuel and Sam Dede brought some nostalgia of seeing them in action roles. Generally it did seem like a low budget production, as the important ingredients that make a blockbuster were amiably missing.
Some notable cast in this are Nancy Isime, John Dumelo, Jemima Osunde, Bob Manuel, Sam Dede, Sharon Ooja, Efe Iwara and others.
Hijack 93′ streams presently on Netflix.
